How To Overcome Interview Nerves

Interviews are one of the most nerve-racking experiences. We have all experienced the uncomfortable feelings that nervousness can generate. Sweaty palms, heart racing, butterflies in your stomach – these are just some of the uncomfortable feelings you will experience during an interview.

As a job seeker, you need to remind yourself that everybody feels nervous during an interview. But, if you don’t master your interview nerves, you won’t achieve positive outcomes.

To overcome your interview nerves follow these three steps:

1. Preparation

The more unprepared you are, the more nervous you will feel before and during the interview. Make sure you do some homework before you enter your interview. This involves doing some homework on yourself as well as homework about the business.

Make sure you are aware of your strengths and have some work examples ready to explain how you have demonstrated your strengths in the past. Likewise, think about one and two of your weaknesses (make sure they are not directly related to the position) and explain how you have overcome or how you plan to overcome these weaknesses.

In most interviews, you will most likely be asked “what do you know about us?”. Don’t get stuck on this question! To find out more about the business, you can search their website and social media sites to get the most up to date information about them.

 

2. Body Language

When we are feeling nervous our body language often reflects this as we tend to slouch and have our arms folded, closing off our body from the outside world. By immediately changing your body language, you are able to change how you feel and how others perceive you!

Walk into the interview smiling and make eye contact with the interviewer(s). During your interview, lean in slightly and take some nice deep breaths. This will reduce your nervousness feeling and give you the confidence to perform your best!

3. Visualise and Positive Self-Talk

The best athletes use visualisation to calm their nerves and to get the outcomes they want. Before you enter the interview, take some time out and visualise meeting the interviewer and visualise the course of the interview going very smooth. Think about the outcomes that you want from the interview, and visualise yourself getting offered the job.

Likewise, you need to quiet those negative voices in your head (and, believe me,  we all have them!) and introduce new positive thoughts in your mind.  Remind yourself how great you are and think about your strengths. A positive mindset will create the platform you need to perform your best.
